Packing a Healthy School Lunch

The school year has already started, but it is never too late to start healthy, filling lunches.  The problem is that many pre-packaged foods are loaded with sugar, salt, and fat.  Even with First Lady Michelle Obama’s push for a healthy school lunch, cafeteria food leaves something to be desired.  We’ve got some lunch ideas that are both delicious and nutritious.

As with breakfast, dinner, and snacks, a nutritious lunch is all about balancing the different food groups.  You want to provide a good mix to keep your kids full and energetic throughout the day.  In the past, school cafeterias have been notorious for serving food that isn’t particularly nutritious.  Packing your own lunches is an easy way to circumvent less healthy options and encourage your children to eat a variety of different foods.  If packing a lunch just isn’t an option, Kids Health recommends going over the cafeteria menu with your children and exploring the available healthy options.
