Swap of the Day: McDonald’s UK Swaps Cashiers for Computers

McDonalds RestaurantUK customers at America’s favorite fast food restaurant may be in for a surprise next time they stop in for a tasty Big Mac or kid friendly Happy Meal. European McDonald’s chain restaurants are in preparation to swap their staff of cashiers with a host of touch screen terminals, eliminating approximately 7,000 jobs in the process.

With the new touch screen automated system customers can conveniently select from the menu and pay for their meal. The new terminals will also be swapping out the use of cash for payments, relying on customers to pay directly by credit or debit card only.

The new terminals will help the fast food chain increase efficiency by cutting down on ordering time, but it seems the move lacks a certain personal touch. For years McDonald’s restaurants has been known for their “service with a smile” approach to ordering food, encouraging consumers to swap items within their order with the staff to give their meal a personal spin.

No news yet on whether the new terminals are headed for to North America.
