Swap of the Day: Malls, From Shopping to Swapping

Swapping MallsWe all like stuff. We especially like new (to us) stuff even more.

Obviously more than a few of you agree, otherwise shopping malls wouldn’t keep popping up at every turn with any rate of success. We like new stuff and we like to shop. And nothing pleases us more than a hard-earned deal on our stuff. Except maybe getting it for free!

Shopping malls, though home to some great deals, have never been the place to acquire free stuff, that is until now!  Exhibit A: a great concept called the Swapping Mall. The swapping and upcycling movements reach far and wide, reaching as far as our swapping friends in South Africa. And it seems like the swapping mall is just the next step in the nature progression of the trend, facilitating the acquisition of free stuff for old unused items.

Much like a real shopping mall, the swapping mall is separated by department. Swappers bring along a few items they would like to, you guessed it, exchange for new items. At a recent swapping mall held at Atlas Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa, a cool twist was added to the concept of simply bringing what you have to trade.  Participants were asked to write down the stories behind the items they brought to swap, which were then placed on tags and attached to the items, giving people’s old stuff new value and a story behind the item.

Now who’s ready to go swapping?
