Swap of the Day: Swapping Stories for Peace

Story SwappingNot only is swapping a great way to save money and trees, it may also be paving the way to a brighter future for Isreal and Palestine.

Spearheaded by the Aspen Writers’ Foundation, a new program titled Story Swap International has made its way to the Middle East with Story Swap Israel. Aptly named, the program brings two groups of participants from different backgrounds together, often via video conference, to share stories of important events that shaped their lives. Individual participants then take those swapped stories and write down their partner’s story as though it were their own.

Simple as it may sound, there is something absolutely incredible about the effect of swapping a story and using it as a vehicle to walk in the shoes of someone from another culture. Story swapping, aside from just providing a fresh perspective on how other cultures view the world, is a wonderful way to build the foundation of peace between Israel and Palestine by allowing each to sit down and listen to the other.

What do you think of the story swapping idea? Have you ever participated in a story swap? Let us know with you comments below or keep the conversation going on our Facebook page.
