Here at swap.com, we celebrate consignment everyday with the core values of who we are. The average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing and other textiles annually. This leaves 85% of textiles in our landfill. What a waste! Our CEO Juha Koponen, wanted to make an impact in improving this epidemic. That meant creating the best online consignment store ever (that’s us). We want to ensure that you save your pocket books and the environment, all while looking fashionably great. With that in mind, consignment has multiple benefits. Below are 7 reasons why shopping secondhand is beneficial. (more…)
I don’t believe in wasting things. When my co-founder and I started Swap.com four years ago, we wanted to help people find the best quality and widest selection of pre-owned goods anywhere, and keep perfectly good items out of landfills. In the United States alone, 85% of discarded clothing ends up in landfills every year—more than 12 million tons!—with the average person throwing away 70 pounds of textiles, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). That’s a lot of wasted stuff. On top of that, the apparel industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions and remains the second largest industrial polluter, second only to oil.
With one of the busiest shopping days of the year coming up, our team is raising awareness of the importance of reducing waste by inviting you to sit out Black Friday and join the Swap.com #GreenFriday event on November 25, 2016.
To participate, simply go to our GreenFriday Facebook Event to and click on “Going.” This simple act will represent your individual pledge to reduce, reuse, and recycle on Black Friday. For every person who signs up, Swap.com will donate one article of high-quality clothing to Cradle to Crayons, an organization that provides children in poverty with the essentials they need, up to $100,000 worth. #GreenFriday pledges will be accepted now through midnight (Central) on November 25, 2016, so sign up today!
Believe it or not, your shopping choices have an enormous impact on the world we all share. With your help, we can promote the virtues of reuse and recycling. Please join the #GreenFriday event, share it with your friends, coworkers and neighbors, and together let’s make Black Friday GREEN.
When it comes to selling items on Swap.com, we have some customers who consistently send in excellent inbound boxes, sell over 75% of their boxes, and get really great pay outs for their gently used items! You may have seen these people featured on previous blogs– they are our Stellar Sellers! Since your success is our success, we wanted to help outline how you can get the most out of Swap.com and our services.
If it were up to us, we would process every single item that was shipped to us and put them on your accounts, we love when your items sell! Unfortunately, though, we can’t accept every item since we have to protect the next consumer. As you’ve most likely read in our acceptance criteria and on our support pages, we can only accept items that are still in great shape. This means that the clothes that are sent in cannot have any holes, rips, or tears, or have any missing buttons or embellishments. Also, items cannot have any pet or human hair on them and they must be odor free. All of this seems pretty simple, right? (more…)
Customer safety and satisfaction is of utmost importance to everyone at, and who uses the services of, Swap.com. As an online consignment store, we want to ensure that all items that are listed are safe to all customers who may use or come in contact with them.
When buying items through consignment or receiving them as a hand-me-downs, it is very important to make sure that the items will be safe to use by everyone in the family. Items could be recalled by a manufacturer for a number of safety issues or product defects. Unfortunately, these defects are often discovered after the product has been purchased and used by many. When I think about shopping, I am filled with both excitement and anxiety. Looking for new clothes, whether it is to look for something specific or because it’s time for a refresh, hunting for the best deals can get exhausting. Just like any other 20-something female, I’m hoping to find the latest trends and classic pieces for prices that won’t break the bank.
Since I don’t have children, I shop Swap.com differently than a lot of our customers. When I browse, I look only for items that are in women’s sizes, then I check that company’s website to see if I’m really getting a deal. I took on the “Build Your Closet on a Budget” challenge and gave myself $150 to refresh my wardrobe for the upcoming season. (more…)
A list of reasons to go shopping can really be endless– Back to school, a growth spurt, an upcoming event, or even boredom. The problem is that shopping, even when it is totally necessary, can become expensive. Back to school and growth spurts are inevitable, special events have to be attended, and sometimes a little bit of retail therapy is just what the Doctor ordered. To keep from spending a lot of money, you can spend hours going store to store looking for what you need and hoping they’re on sale, or you can shop secondhand and consignment options! (more…)
