Happy National Dress Day! If you have a new dress you have been waiting to wear, today is the day to show it off! National Dress Day was founded by Ashley Lauren (fashion designer of the evening dress brand, ASHLEYlauren) in October 2016 to “honor all of the ways dresses help us celebrate the significant moments of our lives”. Dresses have evolved over hundreds of years and although they come in many silhouettes, these 5 dress trends are our favorites at Swap.com.
Midi Length Dresses
If you are like me, most of the short dresses in your closet are meant for more casual occasions during the day and most of the long dresses you own are for a dressier occasion like a wedding. The midi length dress is one of our favorite dress trends because you can not only dress it down with flats or sandals to wear during the day, but you can also easily dress it up with a pair of heels for a more formal occasion. For dresses you want to get more use out of, my best piece of advice is to invest in fabrics like polyester, silk, crepe, satin and chiffon. Dresses made in these fabrics, especially in a midi length dress, can seamlessly take you from day to night by simply swapping out your sandals for a pair of pumps!
The chokers we all know and loved from the 90s are back and not going anywhere soon. In fact, these close-fitting necklaces are inspiring sought-after silhouettes in apparel. This beloved trend can be seen in blouses, sweaters, sleeveless tops and, of course, dresses! This look effortlessly elevates an outfit for a night out on the town, while adding a hint of sophistication with the high-neck detail. Although I have seen the choker dress layered with longer necklaces, I think the best accents would be a funky bangle and a low-heeled bootie in leather or suede. Top off with a denim or leather jacket and you’ll be sure to turn heads wherever you go.
Ever struggle to find a top to pair with your favorite skirt that fits you like a glove? While seemingly a minor hiccup to your morning routine, it can be a source of panic, especially when you’re rushing out the door. Well, I have the perfect solution: the 2-in-1 dress. What makes this dress so easy is that it looks like two awesome pieces when it’s just one that you can slip on and go. Imagine never having to think twice about coordinating an outfit! These 2-in-1 dresses are best for more casual occasions like the office or a daytime occasion. A couple of my favorite 2-in-1 combinations are a black tank “tucked” into the white flowing skirt, or a bright colored silk sleeveless top with leather skirt. With any combination you choose, you can’t go wrong as these were designed to work in harmony.
Sweetheart Neckline Dresses
Sweetheart necklines not only sound adorable, but they also look adorable on every silhouette. This look is best for formal occasions like a wedding, graduation or holiday party. This navy silk a-line dress is the perfect dress for any formal occasion and could be paired back to black heels for a wedding, gold heels for a holiday party or nude high-heel sandals for a graduation party. Personally, I prefer no necklace for sleeveless dresses and with this neckline, you don’t even need one.
I saved my favorite for last — the infinity dress! This dress is probably the most innovative and versatile piece you can own because of the ability to change the neckline of the dress. For example, this grey infinity dress, can be worn as a deep v-neck (as pictured) or as a halter dress when you criss-cross the neckline – amazing! Although this look is intended to be worn 2 ways, there are infinity dresses that can be worn in 3 or 4 ways — deep v-neck, criss-cross halter neck, off the shoulder and strapless. Four dresses for the price of 1 …now, that’s getting a bang out of your buck!
