7 Activities to Keep Your Family Fit and Healthy

Everybody needs to get at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity three times a week in order to stay healthy. Studies have shown that children who are around others who enjoy being active are more likely to participate in physical activity.  Encouraging your family to be active together not only promotes a healthy lifestyle, but it is downright fun!

Making sure your family gets the exercise they need can be a tricky proposition, but it helps to set aside time specifically for being active together.  Physical activity adds up, so you don’t need to get all your exercise in at once.  That means that you can schedule more time on weekends if you find it more difficult to get active during the week.  Plan activities for the family where you can get in your activity, even though it may not feel like exercise.   (more…)

Packing a Healthy School Lunch

The school year has already started, but it is never too late to start healthy, filling lunches.  The problem is that many pre-packaged foods are loaded with sugar, salt, and fat.  Even with First Lady Michelle Obama’s push for a healthy school lunch, cafeteria food leaves something to be desired.  We’ve got some lunch ideas that are both delicious and nutritious.

As with breakfast, dinner, and snacks, a nutritious lunch is all about balancing the different food groups.  You want to provide a good mix to keep your kids full and energetic throughout the day.  In the past, school cafeterias have been notorious for serving food that isn’t particularly nutritious.  Packing your own lunches is an easy way to circumvent less healthy options and encourage your children to eat a variety of different foods.  If packing a lunch just isn’t an option, Kids Health recommends going over the cafeteria menu with your children and exploring the available healthy options.
